One of the newest grocery stores to start carrying Kunoa products is Tamura Super Market in Waianae. We’re enjoying getting to know this business that has been a cornerstone of Oahu’s Leeward Coast community for almost 100 years.
Tamura Super Market has been all in the family since the 1920s when Katsuichi Tamura founded it. He passed the business to his sons, then it went to grandson Cliff Tamura. Cliff’s daughter, Jill Tamura, recently became the owner, making her the fourth generation to operate the business.
With a motto of “Keeping food on the table of our loyal customers,” Tamura Super Market, focuses on keeping customers happy by offering quality products at low prices. One of just two grocery stores in a community with a strong mix of cultures, they also have a full kitchen that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner options, as well as a catering department and a new pharmacy.
With the movement in Hawaii to grow local food production, Tamura Super Market has been bringing in more local products to show customers how much the islands have to offer. It’s also a way to support their own community. The farmers that supply local food are not just “vendors” to them — some are also Tamura customers.
The store also does what it can to give back to the community by offering sponsorships and donations to local schools, organizations, and community programs in need of assistance.
The owners of Tamura Super Market say the best thing about being an independent grocery store is the flexibility they have to make changes and respond to what their customers want. We’re happy they have brought Kunoa into their community.
